How to Let Go of Your Past

I know that I have a tendency to ruminate on past situations and play situations over in my head thinking, okay, if I'd done this one thing differently, the whole outcome would have been different. So why do you think that we have so much difficulty letting go of our past? And more importantly, how we kind of, as you say, like go to that and look forward instead.
