Memory Is a Process of Reconstruction
What we remember is only partly about the thing we are remembering. Our memories are also shaped by all the other things we know. Things that are similar to what we already know, are more likely to stick. Those that are less similar are likely drop off or get modified so they fit better with what we already remember. It's not a simple process of opening a mental file drawer and taking things out - it involves a process of reconstruction.
