We have these wonderful complex ideas that this self somehow exists somewhere else, or maybe it's supported by some magical elixir or energy source. The prevailing wind of the Cartesian view of the mind as an immaterial thing is a magical thing. It's a spiritual thing that that's an idea, which isn't just present. But in some sense, it's honored. People feel that it's wrong, it's morally wrong to challenge that idea. They don't want to think about the prospect that we're just a moist robots. And that's what we are.
