Charles Bunn's fifth never gave an actual explanation of why he chose. And this is my inference that what happened was that Bunn and Smith took over the city of command. He thought he could somehow do it on a shoestring, totally misconceiving the machinery that is at work in a division. So he wasn't just trying to waste his soldiers. I think he genuinely thought 51st time division could do something that was going to raise morale but had the quiet upset effect. That's my interpretation.
