Milton's First Public Poem
By the end of Milton's life, he's probably as well read or more well read than any anyone else alive. His first public poem appears in 1632; it's put in the front matter of the second folio of Shakespeare's plays. He is commissioned to write a mask after sometime after that and they ask him: Do you know what a mask is? "I've heard of it. I've seen it."
