A Defiant Northeast, a Definitive Northeast
The vote in brazil was limited by literacy all the way up until 19 88. Literacy rates were around 60%. And in most parts of the northeast, which meant that most adults couldn't vote. A movement called the movument di cutu do popula, or the popular culture movement. The main focus of the social movement was on expanding education to both children and adults. For children, they started hundreds of schools in te very short span of time. They also had a multi pronged approach to trying to increase adult literacy among the poor. But with the military dictatorship in 19 64, they were closed down. Within within 24 hours of the coup their things were destroyed or burned
