CO2 Levels in the Past

When there's a lot of CO2 in the atmosphere, plants grow leaves with fewer holes in them. Plants don't like to have holes because although it lets CO2 in, it lets water out and so it dries out the plant. So if you look at fossil leaves, you can count the number of stomata in this fossil leaf. And if you see fewer holes, you know, there was more CO2. That's how it's done. There are other examples of that that we could talk about, but that is the flavor of it.
