The Gift of the Spirit

Right livelihood means that the work we do doesn't harm other beings. Thomas Merton puts it this way and he was a very very successful writer or Christian mystic. He said if you write for God or the gods you will reach many men and women and bring them joy. If you write for your own self-promotion you can read what you yourself have written and after ten minutes you'll be so disgusted you wish you were dead. So there's a kind of deep intelligence in what he talks about which is not the writing itself but the spirit within which we write.
