The Importance of Open Conversation With Your Boss

I get the impression that he thinks he needs to rip everything apart to be a good manager or prove he's a superior analyst. He does sometimes give helpful feedback, but the ratio of helpful to unhelpful is way off. I try to help my colleagues preempt him, but that's not working either. Is this an appropriate, difficult conversation to have with your boss? My colleagues do deserve a better work environment, so what should I do?
