Alex Palazzo: drifting into molecular evolution

Razib Khan's Unsupervised Learning

CHAPTER

Random Genetic Drift - What's the Key in Sight?

Yelamem: In terms of neutral theory, i think that the key in sight is the constant rate of evolution m. And so what's happening here? Alex was talking about effective population size, a population size. So you have a small population, it's going to change really, really fast when you have a situation of a lot of volatile random junic drift. Now, the flipside here, thouh is there's not that much variation. There's not much absolute mutation, a introducing variation into the population. A large population going to have less drift. Ah, things are going to change slowly, but there's going to be a lot more background mutation going on.
