Budgets are a political event. And what I found strange was that this morning's papers could not agree on what we've been told. The FT went with Hunt Defy's gloom with upbeat budgets. We got Hunt waves through biggest tax burdens since the war from the times, and the Guardian had give away for the 1%. You could be forgiven by thinking they were all three different countries and three different budgets. If a budget cannot be crystallised in a pithy little phrase, has it failed? No, I do. It wasn't a particularly spectacular budget, there wasn't a big rabbit in the hat that we hadn't seen before. But as far as budget goes,
