I think version eight is going to be used very infrequently. I think those added purely for future purposes and for vendor specific stuff. So you can use different hashing algorithms and know which algorithm it's using by using a hash space. It allows you to really adjust a lot of knobs. There's a lot of hash spaces right now, even Blake to if you really wanted to.
