The Choice Dimension Behind Technological Progress

In your book you argue that there was a lot of technological progress during the middle ages but it didn't express in improvements in living conditions. You build an argument based more than anything on institutions and the choice element of technology. What really happened quite clearly is a lot more surplus in the hands of the elite, because they built not just churches, they built cathedrals, massive cathedrals. The only other historical parallel in the human history is the pyramids, which were built roughly 1500 years started about 1500 years ago.
