Structure Dependence - The Complexity of Language
A lot of the complexity arises from the many different ways in which you can linearize these internal structures that are not inherently linear. In fact, we have striking evidence for that. There's by now overwhelming evidence that as early as you can begin to test children, actually it's down to 17 months and some of it is. By two years old or so, children already ignore 100% of what they hear and attend only to what their minds construct. The operations of language operate on structures, not on linear order strings.
