The catholic church, for all its careful policing of dogma, was unusually tolerant of a wide spectrum of ideas about death and the after life. It is striking that stories of ghosts and remnants, while not quite orthodox, were never declared heretical either. They occupied a capacious middle ground of toleration without endorsement,. an unusually ambiguous implac ment for such a significant area of thought.
