The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
BBC World Service was first to report on Warsaw ghetto uprising in 1943. Germans tried to storm the ghetto with tanks, planes and artillery for three weeks. The Jews fought to cover in cellars and sewers while the Germans systematically liquidated house after house. After D-Day when Allied forces began freeing Europe from Nazi rule, BBC roving microphones could get right into the happy crowds at the liberation of Paris in August 1944.
