The Importance of an Annual Flu Vaccine

The CDC estimates that between 9.3 million and 49 million cases of the flu occur each year in the United States. This is when you have one of these mutations that I just talked about either. And it's usually an antigenic shift, meaning viruses completely exchange pieces of their genome and they created a whole novel strain of the flu. Because it's novel, just like with COVID-19, we have no protection, no immune memory to it. The 1918 pandemic was caused by what we call an H1N1 strain.
