The Indefinite Improvement of Men
Babbitt can be a bit infuriating to me, because he anticipates the problems with his own theory and criticizes them without acknowledging it. He's making fun of the idea that good intentions justify something. We can no more grant that good intentions are enough in dealing with men than we can grant that they suffice a chemist who is handling high explosives. Under certain conditions, human nature itself may become one of the highest of high explosives. If you're not paying attention to how volatile the matter of your experiment is, you'll still do it - even if you don't intend to.
