Why Are Leaves Green?

All green plants are green because they contain a pigment which is a chemical that makes a color. Chlorophyll is the chemical within the leaves that not only makes it green but allows it to harvest sunlight and use that with water and minerals from the soil to make food for themselves. The process of photosynthesis is based on chlorophyll being formed in a leaf. As the days get shorter and the tree knows it's time to prepare for winter, one of the first things it does is it stops making chlorophyll. That means the green color fades.
