The book is based on conversations between Mao Zedong and his son, Lio Bang. The two men debated whether the Chinese emperor should have established a democratic republic. They argued over why he had to kill so many of his friends in order to gain power. Liu: I think we see a strong resonance with how lio bang rationalized his view not from a place of cynicism, but from an own mind of authenticity.
