The Rise of Henry the Lion

In 1154 Barbarossa had granted Henry the Lion the royal rights of investiture over Ratsubok, Oldenburg and Meclenburg. That was an unprecedented grant that elevated Henry the Lion's position to a vice regal if not quasi regal position. And these regal ambitions manifested themselves in his enormous palace of Danquadar order - today part of Brunswick. The Counts of Holstein who had risen to prominence owed their elevation to Lothar III were hence loyal vassals of Henry the Lion.
