Survivors of the USS Indianapolis
About 300 men were killed immediately or otherwise went down with the ship. Survivors had virtually no food or water, apart from a few supply cans and emergency rations that were either taken off the ship or found among the very few life rafts that had deployed. Most of the drinking water was no longer pautable because the containers were leaky. And it became a constant effort simply to stay afloat. Hundreds of men died due to dehydration, salt poisoning, injury, exposure and drowning. Dehydrated, exhausted, tramatized men also started experiencing hallucinations,. swimming away from the group because they believed that they saw an island, or attacking their fellows as if they were combatants.
