The Cultural Valorization of Marriage
Marriage can cultivate hierarchies and inequalities if several conditions are met. The cultural valorization of marriage as the most important end point for a woman means that women can be constantly striving and desperate for that marriage. Dearth of economic opportunities might make women reluctant to leave an abusive marriage. If there's strong social policing women may believe that they they can't exist alone. Even in societies where marriage rates are low it doesn't get you to gender equality.
We're in the 21st century, and it would seem that the world is finally moving towards gender equality, right? Not so fast.
