A hagfish is a jawless, primitive eel-like creature. They are thought to have diverged at around the same time that vertebrates popped up on the evolutionary spectrum. There's fossil evidence up to 350 million years but they're likely over 500 million years old. We really don't know how much they relate to the hag fish of the past.
