The victory at Yorktown was not predestined or pre-ordained. A lot of events that were often independent of each other had to line up as they did, or the siege at Yorktown would have ended quite differently. Benedict Arnold received such a serious leg wound in Saratoga that doctors wanted to amputate his legs but he refused. The British decided it was better to protect their more lucrative parts of their empire than try and subdue the rebellious Americans.
