Onpo - The Failure of the Socialist Party and the Japanese Left
The 19 60 onpo protests did clear a space for new types of protest movement, but primarily because almost all the old forms of protest movement had collapsed. The failure of the socialist party and the japanese left more broadly to coalesce was the result of a sort of cascading failure. It meant that even as the liberal democrats descended into the profound corruption of the seventies, the socialists could do little about it. And in the long term, the political left is still trying to rebuild the coalition that once shook the very gates of the national diet itself.
