The Paradox of Freedom and Virtue
We need the boundaries to be free, he says. And certainly improvisation or the brilliant violinist who learns to play the concerto by the long hours of discipline. This is the paradox of freedom and virtue. That virtue is a second nature. It's a second freedom, if you like, that you submit yourself to the discipline of learning the stuff in order that you can then freely practice it.
