There were three gold rushes in the US. In each one of them, there were private mints that sprung up to serve the gold miners. The Beckler Mint in North Carolina operated for more than 30 years and coined literally millions of dollars worth of coins. So even at the level of producing gold and silver coins, private enterprise can do the job.
