The Importance of Conflict in the Renaissance
The individual comes to embody more conflicting ideas of the self in their Renaissance perhaps than before. And that I think is absolutely inherent to the notion of an individual or a person. There are these internal conflicts. Now, these conflicts don't seem to me conflict with the idea of unity. They conflict, of course, with the ideaof simplicity. Some people have thought that the self was simple, not at all. But that, it seems to me, is not merely the source of conflict, but it's one of the ways in which the individual lives.
