Research shows that students who don't feel thou the language isn't, they don't have to feel like they don't fit. A student with belonging uncertainty is likely to see challenges and setbacks as evidence that they can't cut it. The good news about the research on belonging and mi set is that faculty and others institutions can do a lot to help students develop a sense of belonging.
Peter Felten discusses the research on engaging learners on episode 216 of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast.
