I think silence is the biggest compromise. Non confrontationism or confrontationism on the part of so many is the form of compromise that's the most seductive right now. Machin could have had a very happy life just accommodating himself at Princeton. He didn't do that because he thought it would be, you know, particularly cool to start a new school. I think it was because he recognized the only options at Princeton that were left to him were to lose fast or to lose slowly.
