How to Communicate With Aliens in Maths

Would aliens understand maths at what level and could we use it to communicate with them? This is taking into consideration the universal rules of maths, but what I'm considered would have discovered instead of invented. You couldn't have a conversation with someone just in maths, because it has to translate to something else.
