The Influence of the Stoics on Clinical Psychology
The Stoics had a very strong perspective that it wasn't really what happened to us that affects how we feel. That perspective, if you like, still runs through the tradition of clinical psychology. Albert Addis was an average reader of philosophy since he was quite a young person. He noticed there's lots and lots and lots of negative thinking in depression. So he then thought, well, I wonder what happens if we change some of that negative thinking. The Bex approach arrived at a similar, similar destination but his was much more about looking for certain psychodynamic processes in depression.
