The Problem of the Industrial Worker
In free capitalist society, as Hayek pointed out, he sought a patron. The market does not offer such immediate rewards to the intellectual. Many intellectuals whose main interest seems to be prestige and power turn to the state. In the 19th century, intellectuals facing this problem were a small minority. They had to find some group with whom they could forge an alliance.
