Magellan's son, Christavol Rabelo, also died in the melee. The rest of the force reached the longboats and fled to the safety of their ships. Today the entire area where the battle took place is called the Machten Shrine. There are several elements including a white classical looking obelisk that was built by the Spanish in the 1800s. In the aftermath of the battle, the sibuans chiefed in Humaban tried to recover the bodies of Magellan and his fallen comrades but Lapu Lapu rejected the requests.
