The Rise of Al-Sisi in Egypt
In June 2012, Muhammad Morisi became president in an election that was ostensibly democratic but rife with corruption. After the chaos of the Muslim Brotherhood, many Egyptians welcomed his Sisi as a savior. Al-Sisi's eventual and seemingly inevitable rise to president filed a months-long crackdown on dissent. As head of a newly emboldened military, he ushered in a more violent era of authoritarianism.
