The Golden Age of the Barbary Corps
The Barbary Corps says we call them the Ottoman pirates, but were they really from the Ottoman lands? Well, this is a very important question. Many of them came from Ottoman North Africa, which was a slightly ambiguous territory. It was a frontier territory, so they operated with a great degree of autonomy from the central Ottoman authorities. But the Barbary Corps also attracted a huge number of migrants, if you like, from northern Europe,. particularly from places like England and the Netherlands.
