The Just-a-Dream Hypothesis

Alan Hartley awoke to the sound of a church bell ringing for early mass. His clothes were draped on a chair beside the bed. The fly-leaf was inscribed, to Alan Hartley from his father on his 13th birthday, 71845. He estimated to date at late July or early August 1945. That would make him just 13. Now suppose, since his environment were not an illusion, everything else were. Suppose all those troublesome memories were no more than a dream. Why he was just little Alan Hartley, safe in his room on a Sunday morning, badly scared by a nightmare. Too much science fiction, Alan. Too many comic books.
