René Girard: The Israel of the prophets has plunged into what Gerard calls a sacrificial crisis. To try to go back, the prophets say, will only intensify the crisis. Violence and victimization have been disentangled from divine and made visible as a human predicament. In Gerard's view, this is a huge step forward in human self-understanding.
