Harry Belafonte risked both his career and his safety to promote civil rights. He was censured as an interloper in Trinidad, which is the birthplace of Calypso. There had been major black celebrities before, but none of them had the star power that Harry Belafonte did. None of them were able to break down color barriers and challenge racial attitudes like he could.
