The Importance of Piano Rolls
In the case of so-called reproducing rolls, which supposedly reproduced the pianist's touch at the moment of recording, that really has to be qualified. There are piano rolls of people like Mahler and Debussy playing before recording technology was able to be used in some cases. But you were also saying something very interesting about the way the speed of piano rolls ends up by the end of the piece. So as the roll on the top gets smaller and smaller, there is a natural slight acceleration from beginning to end.
