The Gallup Organization has conducted annual polls going back to 1993 asking Americans, do you perceive that crime is worse this year than the year prior? And over this period, 1993 to the present, on average, 60% of Americans have said that there's more crime now than in prior years. So it literally works in the opposite direction of reality.
