The Big Moment for Neural Nets, 1943 McCulloch and Pitts
In 1943, McCulloch and Pitts published a paper showing that neurons can universally compute. It introduced the idea that the brain might compute something like a computer. And at least that's my impression of the sort of the big moment for neural nets.
