I've always thought of drugs as collapsing in one of two categories, and I'll just throw this half-baked idea at you. The point is to change how you feel on the inside so that you don't have to deal with what's happening on the outside. But there are cases of the same drug doing both those things. At a low dose, it could have that effect of making you feel more alive,. And then at a high dose, you're just kind of medicating yourself into oblivion.
