The Phenomenal Consciousness Concept
The notion of consciousness is a very particular, particular phenomenon. And it takes a lot of philosophical work, or at least some work to introduce the concept. In Nagel's original paper, for example, after he introduced the term, and he immediately points out that this phrase should not be understood in a kind of functional behavioral way. So when experimental philosophers are trying to say, oh, this is just a made-up notion, nothing to do with ordinary language. He's saying, well, it's a more nuanced connection. But the worry is really quite general. The worry from polysemy and the worry from ad hot concept.
