One possibility is that during wakefulness, you're trying to weave a coherent scheme. There's no evidence for this because people haven't done the right experiments. Remembering is an act that kind of hijacks cognitive processing and focuses it inwards. Dreams are perhaps the paramount case of attention being focused inwards because you're asleep and there's no other else for attention to focus basically.
