The Puritans Drank Their Fair Share of Alcohol
The role of alcohol in colonialism is obvious, deserving of much more attention than i can give it here. But i do want to mention some of the ways that european colonizers used alcohol to subjugate and control the people whose lands they invaded. The introduction of distilled liquors was, was kind of huge, and it really changed the way people interacted with alcohol. In north america, colonizers created and spread the stereotype of the drunken indian, which was used to exclude and undermine nativeAmericans from any discussions of government policies or treaties. And this specific prohibition wasn't repealed until 19 53, which is 20 years after nation wide prohibition ended.
