The Rigidity of the Chinese System
The Chinese system couldn't find it within itself to enable him to stay on in China. I just think it's a reflection of the rigidity of the Chinese system and a way in which it is a sort of self-defeating way. One of the consequences of the large-scale expulsions and the dramatic shrinking of the American press corps is that most news organizations have a much smaller number of people. The New York Times has two people now. You can't not cover the everyday wolf warrior fulminations from the foreign ministry, press briefing and what the Chinese are saying about Ukraine or Taiwan ... That can take up all your time.
