He went from being somebody with potential to some one who had already tried and failed. He still could have continued in academi, i think, probably for as long as he wanted to. But his rise to start em is what stopped. Some people think it was a source of resentment towards wagner. I personally don't get that impression. And whatever the majority think is probably wrong.
