Julian Zelizer: I think my interest in material culture developed during my first book project, which was a cultural history of law in the early PIC. The material culture of the world is one of those objects that are both extraordinary and ordinary at the same time; materials more broadly. He says he came to Chinese studies out of an interest in China because when he started his undergraduate degree, he simply could not decide on one discipline that he wanted to study it.
